Mark didnât actually worry when Jane screamed. He knew from experience that she was a terrible patient. She was pretty tough out in the world, but in the exam room, it was a different story.
Like the time sheâd sprained her ankle playing intramural softball. She limped back to the bench, and even though she was in obvious pain, she stuck it out, refusing to leave until the game was over. With he and his roommate supporting her every step of the way, she hopped over to the student health service without a complaint. But the moment the nurse there touched her ankle, she screamed her head off, and she didnât stop until they gave her Tylenol with codeine to calm her down.
He did worry about calling this Alex person, though. He worried that the man might not be in the phone book, which would leave them at a complete loss as far as figuring out what theyâd gotten themselves involved in. Or, even if he did find Alex and reach him on the phone, the man might not know anything. Again, theyâd be stuck.
But his biggest worry was that Alex would be in the book, he would be home, he would answer the phone and he would have useful information. That would involve Alex in this mess, and Mark was not at all in favor of that. When Jane had told the story, sheâd talked about the two men who sheâd gotten mixed up with. Sheâd described one of them, the British fellow from the Bodleian Library, in detail. She talked about him without hesitating, without leaving anything out. She hadnât been quite as forthcoming about the other man. She hadnât mentioned what he looked like in any sort of detail. She hadnât laughed when she talked about him the way she had about the Englishman.
He hadnât thought much of it at the time, and not at all since then. But now he wondered, especially because of how nervous sheâd been when she asked him to call the man. Was she afraid heâd be jealous? Or was she afraid of her own reaction if she had to talk to Alex again after all this time?
But that was crazy, wasnât it? First of all, she was his girlfriend, wasnât she? What was there to worry about? Second, they were dealing with very serious business here, and it was ridiculous to be worried about â what? Some kind of absurd love triangle out of a cheesy date movie?
Of course it was crazy. And Mark continued to think that as he went through the phone book and made fruitless calls to the first six people listed as âA. Cogginâ in the London telephone directory.
He thought it was crazy right up until the minute that the seventh âA. Cogginâ answered the phone with a âHello?â in a lilting Irish accent.
He stopped thinking it was crazy when he apologized for calling so late and asked if he was speaking to Alex Coggin, and that Jane Barnaby had a question for him.
